This is a text-only version of an HTML document. HTML is an enhanced text
format used by the World-Wide Web on the Internet; it allows documents to
contain enhanced formatting, as well as links to other documents. This file
contains the same information as the HTML document, but it may contain
references to a few things (such as links to other documents) that are only
available in the HTML version. If you do have a Web reader, please check the
HTML version instead, at
"http://www.halcyon.com/phaedrus/translist/translist.html". If you would
like more information about the Web, please read the Usenet newsgroup

If the "Last Modified" date is more than six months old, this file is
almost certainly obsolete; please contact me, and let me know where you got
this file so I can send you (and the site you got this from) a fresh copy.
Please email me at transform@halcyon.com if you're using this; generating
the text version of the list is an extra step, so it's nice to know that
someone's getting use out of it...

Please read!
If you've sent me email, I apologize for not replying to it. I have
been working my way through the backlog of email, and I have
essentially caught up in terms of adding entries and corrections, but
I have not yet started sending out replies. I will do that shortly.
If you have a question about the list, the answer may well be on the
Q&A page.
What the List is About
This list includes books, short stories, and other creative works that
feature shapeshifting, lycanthropy, nanotech, and other forms of
transformation. (By "transformation", I mean an abrupt and/or
unnatural change; someone growing up isn't transforming, unless, say,
they turn into a werewolf in the process. :-) )
Each work has also been rated as to how much of a role transformation
plays in it; this should give you a good idea of what works are most
worth seeking out.
Over a hundred people have contributed information for this list;
there's been so many of them that I have to put their names on a
separate page to keep the load times reasonable. :-) My profuse thanks
to everyone who has contributed.
List Format
The list has two major sections; books and short stories. Within these
sections, the list is sorted alphabetically by author. There are other
minor sections for things like comics and TV programs; these sections
are generally sorted by title.
At first, the list may look a bit imposing, but it's easy to read once
you know how it's laid out. An entry on the list looks like this:
_________________________________________________________________
Brandner, Gary
+ The Howling {11/Ph/} [BBT]
[Fawcett; 1977; 0449138240, $1.75] [BB]
[Fawcett; 1986; 0449131556; $?] [BB]
* Rating: 2 Result: LY Significance: + Description: + Saturation: -.
Horror; lycanthropy. Traditional werewolf story. Somewhat the
basis for the original movie of the same name; definitely the
basis for the fourth movie in the series. A reasonably good
transformation description saves it from the trash heap. -11
* As a story it's fair at best, but as a transformation tale it's
worth a look, though I wouldn't quite give it a +. -Ph
_________________________________________________________________
The first line gives the author. The second line gives the title and a
list of the people who have commented on this book. To save room,
these people are listed by number; check the list of Contributors
later on to find out whose number is whose. The people listed before
the first slash (#11, Joe Huber, in this case) gave the book a "+"
rating, meaning that someone interested in transformations should
definitely seek out this book. The people listed between the slashes
(just Ph, myself, here) gave the book a "0" rating, meaning that the
book is about average as far as transformation goes. The people listed
after the slashes (nobody here) gave the book a "-" rating, meaning
that the book uses transformation only incidentally. (If the slashes
are missing entirely, it means that everyone gave the book a "0"
rating.) Please take note that these ratings deal only with the use of
transformations in the work, not with the overall quality of the work
itself.
The character at the far left margin (a "+" here) is a quick
reference; a "+" if there have been more "+" than "-" votes, a "0" if
the votes are even, a "-" if there are more "-" than "+" votes, or a
"?" if the book's entry has critical information missing or if there's
some question as to whether the book belongs on the list at all (many
of these are books that I've gotten from other lists or picked up off
the bookstore shelves, but haven't had a chance to read to confirm
their transformation content; if you are familiar with these works,
I'd greatly appreciate if you could send me the needed info).
The [BBT] to the right is a link to the Bookstore Browser, to let you
search various online bookstores for this book, by title and author.
Each of the next two lines has publication info for a particular
edition of the book; publication info; publisher, year, ISBN and
price. Most of this information comes from my own collection, so the
publication info given may well not be for the most recent edition. If
a "*" appears just after the publication info, it means that I don't
own the book, which means I won't be able to answer any questions on
it. If a "!" appears instead, it means that I don't own the book but
it's on my list of Neat Stuff to Buy. :-) The [BB] is another
Bookstore Browser link, this one doing a search by ISBN (for this
particular edition) rather than for title.
After that, any specific comments people have made about the book are
listed and identified by number.
Link Types
As you read through the list, you will sometimes come across funny
little two-letter codes in brackets. If you're reading the text-only
version, these will probably serve only to be generally irritating. If
you're reading the HTML version, on the other hand, these will point
you to all sorts of hopefully-interesting-and-relevant resources.
* [AL]: Author List. The ftp archive at sflovers.rutgers.edu has a
collection of lists of works by particular authors (in the
/pub/sf-lovers/bibliographies/authorlists directory); this link
will take you to the list of works by the author you're reading
about.
* [BB]: Bookstore Browser link by ISBN. This link will take you to
a separate browser screen, which will let you browse various
online bookstores' information on information on the book (such as
its availability, and reviews written by other customers). If
you're interested, it will also allow you to order the book. This
link does a search for the book by its ISBN number; that's faster,
and more reliable (since it's not as vulnerable to typos in the
author or title), but it means that you'll only see that
particular edition of the book--you won't see other editions that
may have come out. Following one of these links does not obligate
you to buy anything! If one of these links doesn't seem to lead
anywhere, please see the Q&A page for more info.
* [BBT]: Bookstore Browser link by title. This works the same way
as the [BB] links, but does a search by title (and possibly by
author, depending on the store) instead of by ISBN. This will show
you every edition of the book that the store has, not just the
ones I know about. But it's slower, and a bit less
reliable. Following one of these links does not obligate you to
buy anything!
* [Bo]: Cross-reference to Book list. You'll find this if you're
reading the Stories section of the list, and the author in
question has also written transformation-related books; this link
will take you to the author's entry in the Books section of the
list.
* [BR]: Book review. This will take you to a review of the book
you're reading about.
* [DZ]: Dani Zweig's Belated Reviews. Dani Zweig has written a very
large, very well-written set of reviews about various SF authors
and books; this will take you to the review of the book or author
you're reading about.
* [FT]: Full Text. In a few rare cases, the full text of a book or
story may be available on line; for example, Project Gutenberg
electronically archives some books that are in the public domain.
In these cases, following this link will let you see and download
the book or story being talked about. In the case of net
stories--stories only published on the Internet--there will always
be one of these links, letting you download the story. (Because if
there isn't one, I won't list it... simple, huh? :-) )
* [FT$]: Full Text--Commercial. "Virtual publishing" companies are
starting to appear--companies that publish books and stories over
the Internet. With some of them, you have to pay in advance; with
others, you read it, and then pay if you like it. (Or they may
give you the start of the story, but sell you the ending...) This
link will direct you to stories published this way. (It will not
lead you to a location that commits you to spend money, nor will
it display anything you're supposed to pay for if you like. For
that reason, you may have to follow a few more links after this
one to get to the actual story.)
* [GS]: Good Stuff. Things that didn't fall neatly into any of the
other categories, but which seemed interesting enough to include
anyway.
* [HP]: Home Page. An author's home page, which may contain more
info about the author's works.
* [RR]: Raymond's Review. Eric S. Raymond wrote another very large,
very well-written set of reviews about various SF authors and
books. This will take you to his review of whatever the heck it is
you're reading about.
* [SS]: Cross-reference to Short Story list. The opposite of the
[Bo] link; if you're reading the Books section of the list, this
will take you to the author's entry in the Stories section.
* [??]: Watch this space. This one isn't really a link; it means
that this author and/or title has just been added to the list, and
I haven't had the time to check for links that should be added to
it. Before too long, this will go away, possibly to be replaced by
real links.
Compact Entry Format
Joe Huber (#11), one of my best contributors, has devised a nice,
compact format for adding lots of information to his comments. I've
altered his format a bit, to make all the codes the same length and to
make sure that all the codes were unique; I've also added a few
additional codes. If you're submitting an entry to the list, it's
great if you can provide this information in this format.

Transformation Ring [LINK]
There's now a ring for sites dealing with transformation stories. (And
to think it wasn't too many years ago when the TSL was virtually a
lone voice in the wilderness. It's nice to see that I'm not the only
one who's into this stuff. :-) )
Anyway, the Ring is a great way to see what else is out there. So go
check it out!

Comments with "Ph" next to them are my own.
Marge@coyote.cs.wmich.edu was kind enough to send me her "TG SF List",
a list of SF/fantasy stories with transvestite/transsexual themes or
characters. Since then, she has apparently left the net, and her
version of the list has dropped out of sight; however, the list has
since evolved into a much broader list of stories involving gender
"confusion" (transvestites, cross-dressing, etc.), maintained by Bob
Ewoldt. A copy of this list is available at the Rutgers archive
(sflovers.rutgers.edu), as "gender-swapping.txt." Where you see "TG"
listed for a book in this list, it means that that book was listed on
Marge's original TG SF list (I have yet to read through the expanded
list and see what changes were made, mostly because the book portion
of that list is sorted by title, which makes cross-referencing it with
a by-author list like this quite a task); I've tried to place these
markers in the category (+, 0 or -) that seemed appropriate based on
the comments in that list, but I haven't included the comments
themselves, because I didn't want to step on anyone's toes (after all,
the people sending in those comments sent them to her list and not
mine). There are many more books in this list that aren't in mine at
all (and vice-versa, of course :-) ).
Also, there were a few suggestions from another thread on
alt.horror.werewolves; I saved them, but cleverly managed to fail to
save the headers. :-( So these entries are flagged with "AHW".

New Entries
Since the list has gotten Somewhat Large, it's easy for new entries
and changes to get lost in the shuffle. This section, suggested by
Brian Eirik Coe, will contain links to all the new entries and entries
with changed information, so you'll be able to quickly get the
updates.
(For those using the text version, which doesn't have the benefit of
the links, titles like this are books; titles in quotes are short
stories; I'll specify if it's something other than a book or short
story.)
* 98/03/03: Completed converting the Stories section to the new
format. In the process of making these conversions, some of the
internal links have broken; I'm working on fixing that. You'll
notice that the entries linked to from this page now have the
modification date in parentheses; you can now search by
last-modification date from the Power Search page. Speaking of
which, I've made numerous changes to the search engine, increasing
its speed somewhat and adding warnings for frequently-made
mistakes; please try it out if you haven't already.
* 98/03/02: Added some new links to the Resource page. Tweaked the
URL-Minder form a bit, to only send notiifcations every 7 days.
(This won't affect people who have already signed up for the
service, though you can make the change yourself on the URL-Minder
site.)
* 98/03/01: "Over the next few days" turned out to be a bit of an
underestimation. :-) Have now recoded the Books section in the new
format; starting on the Stories section, which should be an easier
job. Tweaked the Power Search a bit, fixing bugs and adding
warnings/error messages to try to spot common problems with search
requests. Tweaked the code system a bit in the process; notably
codes for animal transformations (AN), transformations to/from
inanimate objects (IN), and personality changes (PE). I'll be
changing the code system a bit more, now that I have the search
engine to actually tell me how the existing system is used...
* 98/02/24: Added a prototype Power Search page.
* 98/02/22: I'm "standardizing" the format of the list, to make it
possible to update the search engine to work by title, author,
subject matter, etc. I've already done the "A" books in this way;
I'll be doing the rest of the list over the next few days--I'll
spare you the blow-by-blow updates of how far I've gotten. :-) At
this point, I'm almost ready to start dealing with new entries;
I'll be adding a form-based interface to make it easier to send
things in.
* 98/02/19: Before I go further in adding bookstore links to the
site, I'm trying to make things a bit more "bookstore-neutral".
Everybody has a favorite bookstore, and I want to make things easy
for as many people as possible; besides, it's nice to be able to
compare notes among stores. So you'll notice that the [Am$] links
have been replaced by [BB$] links; these take you to the Bookstore
Browser screen, that allows you to check various online
bookstores' information on the book.
* 98/02/18: Tweaked the search engine some more.
* 98/02/17: Added a very early prototype of the search engine.
* 98/02/16: Since I'm almost caught up, I'm working on improving the
functionality of the list before finishing things off. By far the
most commonly-requested feature is a search engine, so I'm working
on adding one; it'll probably be fairly limited, but it'll be
several orders of magnitude better than the current "go through
the list until you find what you want" searching system. :-) Those
of you who can see invisible ink (or enjoy snooping around through
HTML source) will notice that I've now embedded HTML comments in
the pages, that the search engine will key on. Watch this space.
* 98/02/14: Added books: Piers Anthony's Shade of the Tree; Piers
Anthony and Mercedes Lackey's If I Pay Thee Not In Gold; Marie
Darrieussecq's Pig Tales: A Novel of Lust and Transformation; Alan
Dean Foster's Sentenced to Prism; Alexander Jablokov's Nimbus;
Steve Senn's A Circle In the Sea; Amy Thomson's The Color of
Distance. Updated information on books: Piers Anthony's And
Eternity and Cluster series; Gael Baudino's Dragonsword series;
Greg Bear's Blood Music; Mike Resnick's A Miracle of Rare Design.
Added stories: Pamela Briggs' "Lunch with Janoscz, the
Deconstruction Worker"; Adam-Troy Castro's "The Funeral March of
the Marionettes". Updated information for stories: Clive Barker's
"Twilight at the Towers"; Elizabeth Leslie's "How to Petrify Your

Bullet. Added TV: Doctor Who #2, #7, #15, #32, #35, #36, #37, #42;
She-Wolf of London; Werewolf. Added lycanthropy resources: The
Werewolf Page. Corrected numerous errors in the Comics section.
Added Amazon.com links for the "B" books.
* 98/02/13: Processed a very large list of lycanthropy stories from
William Osborn. Added books: William Bridges' The Silver Crown;
Jonatha A. Caspian's The Nightmare Dream; Carla Cassidy's Heart of
the Beast; Stephen Charles' Nightmare Session; David Cook's
Soldiers of Ice; Cox and Weisskopf's Tomorrow Bites anthology;

Questions about the books on this list
Where can I find book (such-and-such)? Can you sell it to me?
Many of the books on this list are relatively new; they should be
available (or at least readily available via special order) in just
about any bookstore. Other books on this list are out of print,
sometimes long out-of-print; they are very difficult to find.
Bookstores that carry used books may have them; your guess at to which
stores have them is as good as mine. (In many cases, if I knew where
the book would be found, I'd have bought it there myself. :-) )
In order to make the books easier to find, I have added a "Bookstore
Browser" feature. You'll see "[BB$] links next to some of the books
(eventually, next to all of them); these links take you to a screen
that lets you view various online bookstores' information on the book,
and optionally order it. (Top)
I need help with my paper on such-and-such. Can you give me more information
on...
No, I can't. I really wish I could, but I can't. If I had more
information on such-and-such, it would probably be in this list
(assuming that "such-and-such" is transformation-related). I have
tried to make the list as comprehensive as possible, and I am looking
at ways to make it more interactive (to allow for more searches and so
on). That's the best I can do.
If you're looking for help, the best thing you can do is go to an
appropriate Usenet group and ask. (Top)
Please send me stories involving... (Insert adult-oriented details here.)
No. Please do not ask me this question. I will not reply.
Believe it or not, I do not have a huge secret horde of
transformation-related adult stories. And if I did, and if I wanted to
distribute them, they would be here.
If you're looking for the actual text of transformation stories on the
net, then the Transformation Stories Archive is the place you should
be looking. There are many other story archives on the Transformation
Ring.
I have nothing against adult-oriented stories. But there are already
fourteen jillion adult-oriented story sites on the Internet. There is
no need for me to get into that market. :-) (Top)
What about the "net stories" that used to be here?
"Net stories" are stories that have only been published on the
Internet; in some cases they were written by groups of people on a
Usenet newsgroup. In the past, a few net stories involving
transformation were listed here; but I ran into all kinds of problems
with them--nobody seemed to have them available anywhere, everyone
wanted me to send them copies of them, and nobody wanted to believe
that I'd never even seen them in the first place. :-) So those entries
have been removed.
Thomas Hassan's Transformation Stories Archive, at
http://www.t0.or.at/~thomash/tsa/, is a great source of transformation
stories online. In addition, the Transformation Ring contains a great
many story archive sites. (Top)
Questions about the transformation list in general
How did the list get started?
Well, I was taking a fiction class, and one of the papers due for that
class was a free write (you could write on just about any
fiction-related topic your heart desired). Well, I decided to do mine
on the use of the transformation theme in science fiction and fantasy.
Which led to the next question: what books to write about? We weren't
supposed to use books we had already read, which shot a lot of
transformation-related books down for me, since I'd always been
interested in them. And I quickly ran into an unanticipated problem:
while there are any number of resources letting you find nonfiction
books by subject, that sort of information on fiction in general, and
sf/fantasy in particular, is spotty at best. At that point, I made two
decisions that led directly to the founding of this list:
* I reached the same conclusion that just about every student
confronted with the net reaches at one point or another: "Hey, if
I can't find anything good myself, I'll bet those folks on the net
can help me out."
* I typed the six words that have probably cost me more time than
any other six words in my life except "I'd like to apply for
college": "Please email me and I'll summarize." :-)
Well, I got email. A lot of it. Enough suggestions, in fact, that I
probably wound up spending twice as much time going through them all
and deciding which to use than I would have if I'd just picked a few
books from the library at random and been done with it. Such is the
price of knowledge. :-) The summary of those responses wound up being
the first version of the list. (Top)
How did that paper go? Can I see it?
Next question. :-) (Top)
Okay, that explans the first version of the list. How about the other umpteen
versions since then?
Well, in addition to the suggestions, I also got a lot of "Please send
me a copy of whatever you get" and "That's a good idea!"-type
responses--many more than I would have expected based on similar
questions I'd asked in the past. After I posted the list, the response
level, both submissions and requests for copies and so on, got even
higher. For whatever reason, the list seemed to be a big winner. And
given that level of interest, and the number of nice people I met by
having them write me about the list, it seemed like a shame to let it
die.
Besides, I've got ulterior motives. I've always had a very strong
interest in stories of this kind, and through years of living next to
used bookstores, I've managed to build up quite a collection of it.
(Note to aspiring crooks: Said collection has a resale value of about
14 cents per pound, and I live on the top floor of an elevatorless
building. Draw your own conclusions. ;-) ) Maintaining this list is a
lot like having your own book-finding service--all sorts of nice
people telling you about books you've never heard of that you'll
probably find very interesting. And all it costs is hours and hours of
free time... (Top)
How long do you plan on maintaining the list?
Well, I don't maintain it as much as I used to, or as much as I would
like to. I still put up a new version every so often ("every so often"
varies depending on how overworked I am). I certainly plan on keeping
the list available for the foreseeable future, even if I don't have
time to update it sometimes. (Top)
Why are books and stories listed separately?
For two reasons. First, many people are interested in one but not the
other. Second, anthologies and non-anthologies are usually listed
separately at bookstores, and anthologies are often shelved in a
different order; so mixing books and stories together would make it
more difficult to shop from a printout of the list. (Top)
Is a text-only version available?
Yes, at http://www.halcyon.com/phaedrus/translist/translist.text.
(Top)
Do you maintain the text-only version separately from the HTML version?
No; that's what makes it manageable. The text-only version is
constructed automatically from the HTML version. The mainframe I use
has the "lynx" Web browser; and one if its features is a "dump"
mode--you can give it an HTML file, and it will output the whole thing
as text just as it would be if you were browsing it. So I just use a
script that does this for all the files in the document, adding some
extra information before and after the list and in between each one;
the script looks something like this:
cp transbeginning.text translist.text
lynx -dump "transmain.html" >> translist.text
cat transdivider.text >> translist.text
lynx -dump "transbooksa.html" >> translist.text
cat transdivider.text >> translist.text
lynx -dump "transbooksb.html" >> translist.text
...
lynx -dump "transstoryz.html" >> translist.text
cat transdivider.text >> translist.text
lynx -dump "transspoil.html" >> translist.text
cat transending.text >> translist.text
So when I update the HTML version, all I do is run this script to
regenerate the text version. Then I quickly scan through the text
version with a word processor and remove the "Where to from here?"
navigation sections from the end of each part of the list, since they
only apply to the text version. Even for a list this size, the whole
regeneration-and- editing process only takes about five minutes. (Top)
Do you plan on continuing to provide both versions?
Yes, absolutely. I do think that anyone with access to a Web reader
should definitely use the HTML version; but there are plenty of people
without that access, and the text version is still important to them.
So the text version will stay. (Top)
What changes do you plan on making to the list?
I plan on adding a form-based interface, to make it easier to send in
new entries.
The search engine will be greatly improved.
I'd very much appreciate brief summaries for those works that don't
currently have them (and those that do, for that matter :-) ).
Some works still don't have complete publication info; any information
you can provide on these works would be most helpful. (Almost all of
these works are flagged by a question mark where the publication info
should be.)
For those works with question marks by the left margin (meaning that
I'm not sure whether or not they belong on the list), I'd greatly
appreciate any additional information on these works that you can give
me.
Ideally, all the listed works should have at least a basic explanation
of what is transformed into what and how. If you're familiar with any
of the listed works that don't have this information given, I would
very much appreciate your providing it (though be sure to let me know
if it constitutes a spoiler).
And of course, new works are always more than welcome too. :-) (Top)
Why isn't my question here?
Just because. :-) Seriously, if there's a question that you think
should go in this list, just email it to me (transform@halcyon.com)
and I'll probably include it. (Top)
You have a thing about werewolves, don't you?
Guilty as charged. :-) (Top)
Questions about the Bookstore Browser feature
How do I add a bookstore to the list?
Let me know the particulars (the name of the store, its Web address,
etc.). There are certain technical limitations on the stores I can
link to; but if I can, I will. (Top)
Why are you sending me cookies?
The Bookstore Browser window will send you one cookie whenever you
change bookstores. (The bookstore you're sending to may also send you
additional cookies; I have no control over that.) This cookie is used
to remember the last bookstore you used--so that, the next time you
click on a Bookstore Browser link, it will give you info from the same
store. If your browser doesn't accept cookies, the Browser will still
work just fine; you'll just have to select a bookstore manually each
time.
The cookie does not contain any identifying information about you, and
it's not used for any kind of statistical tracking; it's just used to
remember the default bookstore. (Top)
I click on one of the [BB] or [BBT] links in the List, and nothing happens.
What's up?
Let me guess; you're using Internet Explorer, aren't you? This is a
known bug in IE, at least in IE4; under certain circumstances, the
ability of IE4 to open new windows can become disabled. When that
happens, links that try to open a page in a different window, like the
Bookstore Browser links, will simply fail, with no error message. (You
may also be seeing "Interface not supported" errors when you're
browsing pages on other sites; those sites are trying to open new
windows through scripting.)
The Microsoft Knowledge Base contains an article on the problem,
including an easy workaround to fix it. (Note: They don't mention that
you have to restart your computer before the fix will work.) (Top)
Questions about additions and changes to the list
Hey! That entry spoils the whole story!
Please let me know, and I'll move it to the spoiler section. (Top)
Are you interested in new entries, or new information for the existing
entries?
Absolutely. I always welcome additions or corrections to the list;
please email them to me at transform@halcyon.com. Any work that has
transformation in any form (lycanthropy, genetic engineering, some
forms of vampirism, magic spells, curses, whatever) as a theme is
eligible. It doesn't matter if the story is any good or not, though it
would be nice if you tell us if it's lousy so we don't go in with any
false hopes. :-) For each story you add, please give as much of the
following information as possible:
* The title and author.
* The publisher, ISBN, publication year and price, if available.
(These are a great help to people trying to find or order the
work.).
* If the work is a short story, it would help others find the story
if you give the above information on a book or magazine in which
the story can be found.
* A brief description of how transformation is used in the story
(who is transformed into what and how), and anything else you feel
would be helpful to know about the story (such as whether or not
it's actually any good :-) ). If you feel that any of this
information constitutes a "spoiler," please say so and that
information will be put in the Spoiler Section instead of in the
regular list.
* A "degree of interest" rating. If transformation is a major theme
of the story (in other words, if this is a work someone interested
in transformation should really seek out), give a "+" rating. If
transformation is only incidentally involved in the work (in other
words, if it definitely wouldn't be worth someone's time to track
this down solely for the transformation content), give a "-"
rating. If it's somewhere in between, give a "0" rating; this is
what I'll assume if you don't give a rating, unless your
description of the work gives me strong reason to believe
otherwise. (Bear in mind that these ratings are trying to gauge
the involvement of transformation in the work, not solely the
number or degree of transformations present; a story where only
one character is transformed before the book begins and that plays
a key role in the book might well be a "+", while a book where a
transformation occurs every page but nothing is ever made of it
might be a "-".) Also bear in mind that the quality of the work
itself should not go into this rating, though it can certainly go
into your description above.
* If you'd like to be exceptionally helpful, you can add the
additional information described in the "Entry Format" section.
(Note that the "Significance:" in the Entry format is the "degree
of interest" I talked about above, so you don't need to do that
again.)
* If you know HTML, then feel free to use it in writing up your
entries. If you don't know HTML, don't worry about; just write in
plain text, and I'll make any necessary changes.
* Also, if you would like your entry on the "Contributors" list to
link to something, please let me know that as well. (Top)
Why didn't you answer my mail?
For a while, I had the excuse of incompetence--I couldn't put together
a mail filter that would reliably do the job of sorting incoming mail
without eating it. Now I no longer have that excuse. So I have to rely
on a more basic one; I have about 10 hours' too much stuff to do every
week...
I have a job which I greatly enjoy, and which pays very well, and
which takes up large chunks of my time. I also have a few things
besides transformation stories that I like to do in my spare time. As
a result, work on the list sometimes gets delayed, and I build up big
backlogs of mail. I am truly sorry about that. I am trying to get
better at managing things. But experience has shown that I can't
promise to answer mail within a set time frame; if you get the
auto-acknowledgement when you send me mail, that means I did get it,
and it will be added to the list as soon as I make it through the
backlog. (Top)
What if I don't have all the information you're asking for?
I'll take what I can get; the beauty of it is that someone else will
probably provide the missing information later. (Top)
How long should my description of a book or story be?
Well, long enough to say what you want to say, and not too much
longer. :-) It's good if you at least describe what gets transformed
into what and how; it doesn't hurt to at least briefly mention whether
or not the book is any good (but try not to dwell on this aspect; this
isn't a book reviews list). More than ten lines of text describing a
single book is probably excessive, though I'm flexible with this rule
when what's being said is good. When in doubt, say too much; I'll edit
your entry down to size if I have to. (Within reason; if you send me
eighteen pages, I'm likely to just chuck it. If I had time to read and
condense a huge entry, I'd have time to read the 450 books in my "to
do" pile. :-) ) (Top)
Is it okay if I list my own book?
Yes, that's more than fine. However, please read the previous
question. Since you're a published author, I'm sure you're familiar
with the virtues of writing within the guidelines of the publisher
you're submitting to; the guidelines here are "no more than ten lines
or so, reasonably objective". And if sufficiently provoked, I do send
back rejection slips...
If you send me your publisher's press release about a book complete
with glowing cover jacket quotes, there's often not a whole lot I can
do with that; press releases are often pretty vague about the actual
plot of the book they're plugging, and the cover jacket quotes just
aren't appropriate here. If you can't come up with a ten-line summary
of the book you just wrote, how do you expect me to do it? :-)
Of course, if you give a URL to another site with more information,
I'll include that in the Web version. (Top)
I'm not sure whether this is a spoiler or not...
Just tell me this, and I'll list it in the Spoiler Section anyway;
better safe than sorry. (Top)
This typo showed up on the list in the entry I sent you...
I'm very sorry; in a list this size, it's bound to happen. Just let me
know and I'll fix it. (Top)
I'd like to send in an entry, but I haven't the foggiest idea what HTML is or
how to write it.
You don't have to; that's my job. :-) Just send in the information as
plain text, and I'll add all the necessary HTML stuff. (Top)
I'd like to send in an entry, and I'm an HTML wizard; can I use any HTML I
want to in my entry?
You're welcome to use the HTML formatting tags; for emphasis,
for book titles, and so on. You're also welcome to use links. I
would ask that you not get carried away with formatting, though, and
that you not use lists and headings and so on; a consistent look is
important for making the list readable and manageable. Inline graphics
will not be allowed. If necessary, I'll edit the HTML part of your
entry to make it work with the list. (Top)
What about other types of transformation materials other than books and
stories?
If you think something should be listed, send it in; I'll try to find
room for it somewhere. (I just added sections for movies and TV;
they're still waiting for content, of course...)
Please be at least somewhat discriminating; list only things where
transformation plays a significant role in the work, not just a
special effect that's glossed over quickly. (For example, a comic book
hero with a secret identity does not constitute a "transformation
story"...) (Top)
What information do you give out about your contributors?
I list contributors' names, but not email addresses or any other
information (unless they specifically request it). I do not privately
give out any information that does not appear in the list, even if I
know it, which I usually don't. :-) (Top)
I'd like to send an entry to the list, but I don't want my name showing up on
it.
Fine; just pick a nickname that's not too corny and tell me to use
that instead. :-) (Top)
Where to from here?
From here you can go up to the list index, up to the contributor list,
on to related resources, on to books, on to short story entries, or on
to spoilers.

* I am looking for the title of a science fiction book I read in a
public library 10-15 years ago. [...] Setting: Far in the future,
on several different worlds. Hero: Reed Novak, a warrior with a
rebuilt silicon based body and special powers. Enemy: Ancient
energy creature that feeds on life force and knowledge. Plot: Reed
Novak's silicon body was built as a weapon to destroy an ancient
energy creature in another universe before it can return to the
Universe of Man and destroy all life as it did millions of years

transforming young co-eds into mermaids, for reasons unknown. The
only other info that I recall is that the authors name was
something like Allinson? Have you or any of your other

* [Result: BM/AN.] Also, I remember reading a great transformation
story, in a book that is now out of print. The book was called
Unicorn Tales, (or something like that). It was about a man who
was inexplicably turning into a unicorn. I noticed there was a
story about a were-unicorn on your page by Stephen Donaldson, but
I believe this story was written by someone lesser known (please
correct me if I am wrong!)
An informal summary: He was basically a librarian, although in his
far-flung future there was no need for him. As a matter of fact,
the government ran your life, woke you up in the morning,
monitored your health, etc. He always went along with whatever the
government said, but once a horn started growing from his head he
began to wonder about things like, why does everyone think
imagination is foolishness? As a matter of fact, everyone ignored
the horn in the middle of his forehead. This story is THE BOMB. I
really enjoyed it, but that may have something to do with the fact
that I am addicted to unicorns. -140 (98/02/08)

perfectly ordinary boy. Perfectly ordinary that is, until the
night when, safely tucked up in bed, he slowly but surely turns
into a dog! What becomes of Eric--the adventures he has with his
best friend Roy, and their joint efforts to puzzle out the reason
for his transformation--makes a very funny and entirely believable
book."

descriptive and somewhat saturated. Important (integral, in fact)

About the entire Animorphs series:

[1: The Invasion: Apple; 1996; 0590629778; $3.99] {148//} [BB] [BBT]
* [Cause: AX Result: BX/AN/PE.] The characters, Jake, Rachel,
Cassie, Tobias, and Marco are given the ability to transform when
they encounter a dying alien. They must 'acquire DNA' from an
animal in order to have the ability to become it (via direct
contact). They are told to help fight for the survival of human
existence using the new abilities before the alien dies.
Transformations are all physical with a mental additive such as
the instincts or state of mind of the particular animal. Thus far,
all transformations have been only to animals not inorganic or
plant shapes. Transformations in Book 1 include: Dog, Cat, Hawk,
Lizard, Horse, Elephant, Tiger, and others. A two-hour time limit
is imposed to add a suspense factor. If a character spends more
than two hours in a "morph" they are unable to revert to their
human form (or change to any other.) Tobias, at the end of the
book, goes over his two hour limit as a Red-tailed Hawk. -148

[2: The Visitor: Apple; 1996; 0590629786; $3.99] {148//} [BB] [BBT]
* [Cause: AX/NA Result: BX/AN/PE/MU.] The "Animorphs" (the group of
kids who've been given some pretty awesome powers) realize that
the threat to humans (and all life on Earth for that matter) is a
real one. In order to get more information about the aliens and
their plot, they eavesdrop on one of them.
The aliens are basically slimy things that inhabit human bodies
like parasites, but take control mentally and physically of them.
Therefore, many humans who otherwise appear normal, are actually
alien-controlled and simply make things much harder for our
heroes. The Animorphs discover that the school's vice-principal is
a "Human-Controller" and eavesdrop on his conversations with alien
leaders. Rachel becomes a cat like that of the vice-principal's
daughter, and goes snooping. Book 2 transformations include: Cat,
Flea, Shrew, and others. -148 (98/02/10)
[3: The Encounter: Apple; 1996; 0590629794; $3.99] {148//} [BB] [BBT]
* [Cause: AX/NA Result: BX/AN/PE/MU.] Focuses on Tobias, who is now
permanently a Red-tailed Hawk. This book is my favorite so far.
The author does a good job of describing (insofar as a Young Adult
novel goes) Tobias's position. i.e. how he feels and how his
friends react. During the course of the book, Tobias discovers a
strange phenomenon in the sky, which turns out to be an alien ship
travelling to and from a mountain lake. The Animorphs investigate
and find that the Aliens are stealing natural resources (in this
case, water) to further their survival while waiting in orbit.
(All this alien stuff sounds somewhat dorky, but it is well-wove
into the transformations and the rest of the story.) Our heroes
decide to put a halt to their activities and using every secret to
their powers, barely accomplish their goal. There is a good
chapter or so that deals with Tobias trying to accept the fact
that he'll be an animal for the rest of his life. Transformations
this book: Wolves and Fish in addition to those previous. -148

alien in particular is on the same side as the humans, which leads
them off on a quest to find it and rescue it. Cassie and the other
still-human Animorphs journey to the sea and make use of Dolphin
and Seagull forms to get there. Very invigorating adventure and as
always, written with a style that's positive, interesting and fun
to read. -148 (98/02/10)

* Rating: 3 Cause: AX/CM/GM Result: BM Significance: 0 Description:
+ Saturation: +. A future setting sends humans to alternate
history-style adventures; Spingarn, the central character,
activated "Frames" that cause human entries to be transformed into
new and very different forms. He and three others are sent to
deactivate the "Frames." Difficult to follow on a first
read-through; Ball is very scrupulous about authenticity; the
characters never explain things they already know to one
another--so the reader has to infer the meaning of the "Frames"
and the specific problem. Fairly well-written, though. Sequel is
Planet Probability. -104

Patternmaster is the first written, weakest, and contains no

of a "transformation story"--the transformations are well
described, reasonably explained for their environment, reasonably
frequent and varied, and still do not dominate the story--which is
wonderfully told. SF; Rating: 4 Cause: X Result: MT/SC
