The Art of Compromise

"Uh, just in salads," you mutter. Ryan (or Brian) seems disappointed, but you quickly change the subject back to work.

"I'd be happy to see what I can do," you tell the old man, "but I'd feel out of my league if I were to start out on the road. Could you find something for me to do around here, please, and if all goes well, take it from there?"

You feel that this is a good compromise, and the old man agrees. "What a wonderful suggestion!" he announces. "Ryan, why don't you get him a uniform from the storeroom so that he can start right away?"

The stockboy snarls. "It's Brian," he tells the old man.

"Yes, yes, whatever", snaps the old man. "We can have him help with inventory, especially with those high shelves that I can't reach!"

You laugh. "If Brian isn't tall enough to reach them," you query, "then how do you expect me to?"

The old man smiles back at you. "All in good time, my boy! All in good time. Now, try on your uniform, and I'll show you the tricks of the trade." Brian hands you a blue apron and a tiny hat, and you put them on without any difficulty.
