Space and Time and Kellogg's Corn Flakes®

As you drift in and out of a sleep that is more like a never-ending nightmare, voices tantalize your ears like gnats. "...found him, are you sure?" "...and when I talked about magic..." "...someone stop the bleeding, we need to..." "...found him dead, never be..."

As if there were a veil of cotton over your eyes, the world seemes awash in confused light and sounds. Hovering above you, a face. "He's waking up!" the face says. Suddenly more and more faces.

"Um..." you try to say. The face immediately above you says, "He's always saying that. Give him a chance and something interesting usually follows."

"Um..." you try to say a second time. The faces seem to hover expectantly. "Um, I guess I'm not a bear anymore, huh?"

The hovering face changes into a torso that seems to be standing nearby. "A bear? One of the drawbacks of gating is that sometimes you are transformed against your will. If you had some training it wouldn't have happened, but it was take a chance or be eaten by a lizard."

You absorb this like a smooth porcelain plate doesn't absorb water, and say, "The lizard... You don't suppose he's still there, do you? I'd like to go back now."

The man, whom you now recognize as the otherworldly creature you met in your apartment back when things were normal, says, "Not yet. The lizard might not be there, but there might be another acorn stashed in a corner waiting for your arrival. You don't want to meet a bad nut these days, you never know what will happen..."

You take this in with your usual sense of dignity. "What?!?!? What do I do now?? And where am I, anyway?"
