Fairy Physiology

Tiffany sees your shocked look and explains. "My mom and I are fairies, and my dad is human."

"I get that", you answer dazedly, still focused on the two diaphanous wings behind her back ... and for the first time you begin to understand what the word "diaphanous" means ...

"Would you rather have had a were-platypus?"

"Good point."

"Would you like to know more about fairies?" At your nod, she begins. "There are three different types of fairies. Small, medium, and large. Small is the size of a butterfly, medium is about the size of a human child, and large is my size. Small, mind you", she adds with an exasperated look, "is the only full-blooded fairy type with any males. There are also different levels of fairy bloodedness. My mom is a full-blooded fairy, for example, and they start at 20, then age to about 60 or so and stop getting any older. I am a half-fairy, roughly fifty percent human on my father's side. We start as infants and age to 20 or 30, then stop. If we were to have kids ... just as an example", she smiles, "I'm not trying to shock you or anything ... but they'd be a quarter fairy. They'd still have wings and magical ability, but they'd age at a normal rate ... they'd be long lived", she sighs, "but still mortal. About the smallest known bloodedness is partial fairy, anything less than a quarter. No wings, you age normally, but you still have magical ability. Sometimes it's latent, though. So, do you want to get together?"

"Um, I-I'm not sure", you stammer, feeling rather out of your depth. "I do have one question. How do full fairies reproduce?"

Tiffany winks. "Nosy, aren't you? Not a problem around here, she says with a look at her mother's stifled laughter, "but don't let great-aunt Melusine hear you ask. Other families vary, of course, but mine just use their magic to create an egg. The egg hatches into a larva, and the larva eventually becomes a fairy. Like my sister", she adds, gesturing to a shape you thought was a large hedgerow in the shadows.

As your gaze follows her hand, you see a huge, fuzzy shape, almost like one of those caterpillars that turns into moths. As you watch, a light erupts from it, and the whole form erupts into a glow like the magnesium ribbons you burned in chemistry class. You avert your eyes from the blinding radiance ... and it dies. When you look again, you see another winged girl, much like Tiffany.

"Lucky you", Tiffany almost breathes close by your ear as you stare, "you get to witness the birth of a full fairy. Half and quarter fairies can do that, too. But of course", she laughs with a sound like chimes, "we don't get a full fairy out of it. Some things, even magic can't do. Anyway, if you like, I could transform you into a fairy. You'd be a half-fairy, of course, since that's what I am, and the first bloodedness to appear in the male line. Do you want to try it?"
