Over the River and Through the Woods

Everyone proceeds to the parking lot, where the station wagon awaits. You take a seat in back and breathe a sigh of relief. "How was the drive down?" you ask Chad.

"Great!" he replies, counting out change for the toll collector. Once you reach the highway, conversation resumes.

"We expect Michael and Lisa some time tomorrow," says Melissa. "The kids have to get shots of some sort, or else, they would have come yesterday. Peter! No morphing in the car." She hands him a snack, and he behaves.

"Like father, like son," muses Carol, and Chad laughs. "Have you seen Lisa since she got pregnant? She really wants a cat this time."

Chad utters a soft whine before commenting. "Yeah, that's a drawback to mixed marriage that I never considered. Mom, did you ever want a platypus?"

Carol shakes her head. "You're forgetting that I had Cheryl to keep me company. Lisa remains the only cat in the family. Michael has been very good to her, though, and that's far more important than his phenotype."

Melissa nods in agreement. "I still can't believe that dogs and wolves are so different. Whenever the kids get together, Michael does everything but pass around sedatives. Jeremy's very smart, but we still can't convince him that Erin doesn't want to eat him."

You choose to look on the bright side. "If you think that it's bad with dogs," you note, "just imagine how bad it would be with cats." Everyone concurs, and moments later, the station wagon pulls into a very familiar driveway.
